Reusable serviceware/packaging at markets (& events) in Aotearoa New Zealand
(December 2023)

By Kim Renshaw of Reuse Aotearoa and Beyond the Bin. Jointly funded by Reuse Aotearoa and Takeaway Throwaways

This information sheet offers guidance for markets operators and/or vendors wanting to set up viable reusable serviceware systems at events and markets. The resource covers key considerations, including:

  • who needs to be involved in designing and running the system

  • options for funding the cap-ex and op-ex

  • decisions around procurement and ownership models for reusable serviceware fleets and washing infastructure

  • designing a system that has the capacity to deliver for the market it will serve, taking into account the number of vendors and the number of sales that the system will need to support.

Choosing a Safe and Sustainable Reusable Serviceware Fleet
(December 2023)

By Fiona van Petegem of Regenerative Business Development. Commissioned by Takeaway Throwaways

The purpose of this report is to support groups in Aotearoa New Zealand who are establishing reusable serviceware systems (with a focus on event settings) to procure the most sustainable and safe reusable serviceware fleets possible. The report provides an evidence-based review of the key considerations - environmental impact, public health safety, cost and functionality - for investing in low-impact, high-quality reusable serviceware fleets, and applies these considerations in a high-level decision-making matrix that can be used by anyone in New Zealand looking to invest in a reusable serviceware fleet. The report also includes a deep-dive analysis of material safety for different types of reusable serviceware, which is summarised in Appendix A of the full report.

(28 June 2022)

Our official written submission on the Takeaway Throwaways petition to the Parliamentary Environment Select Committee. The submission explains why single-use serviceware is a problem, what reusable serviceware systems are and how they can address the problem of single-use, and the government action we think is needed. Includes a handy table of various suggested policies, regulatory levers and investments that could support the Takeaway Throwaways petition request.
